Orifice Plate Flow Meter for Industrial Flow Measurement

An orifice plate flow meter is a differential pressure flow measurement device used to measure the flow of liquids, gases, and steam in pipelines. A precisely machined orifice plate is installed inside the pipeline, creating a pressure drop used to calculate flow rate.

An orifice meter is made up of robust materials, including stainless steel. They can withstand pressure and temperature. They have no moving parts, and their design is simple. This makes it one of the most widely used differential pressure flow meters in industrial applications.

Key Features of Our Orifice Plate Meter

An orifice plate flow meter consists of a precision-machined plate installed in the flow stream, which is installed in the flow stream. The plate is designed with a precisely made opening, called an orifice, through which the fluid passes.

Key features include:

  • Precision-machined bore for accurate measurement
  • Robust construction suitable for high-pressure service
  • Standard flange or carrier ring installation
  • No moving parts for reduced maintenance
  • Compatible with differential pressure transmitters

The simple design ensures that the device works well even when used continuously.

Working Principle of Orifice Flow Meter

An orifice plate flow meter works on Bernoulli’s principle. As the flow approaches the orifice plate, the velocity increases while the pressure decreases.

Working process:

  • Fluid flows toward the orifice plate
  • The flow area reduces at the orifice opening
  • Velocity increases and pressure drops
  • Differential pressure is generated across the plate
  • Flow rate is calculated using the measured differential pressure signal

The pressure taps are located upstream and downstream of the orifice plate to measure the differential pressure. The differential pressure is then used in a differential pressure transmitter or flow computer to determine the flow.

Orifice Type Flow Meter Design and Construction

An orifice flow meter consists of a flat or bevelled plate mounted between flanges in a pipeline. The plate holds a concentric, eccentric, or segmental bore depending on the application and type of fluid.

    Key design elements:

    • Precisely machined orifice opening
    • Flange-mounted or carrier-ring construction
    • Standard pressure tapping configurations
    • Rigid and compact design

The device has a simple design that makes it easy to install and replace. Since there are no moving parts, it provides reliable performance in continuous industrial applications.

Types of Orifice Plates Used in Flow Measurement

Orifice plates are available in different bore designs based on flow conditions:

    • Concentric orifice plate for clean fluids
    • Eccentric orifice plate for fluids with suspended solids
    • Segmental orifice plate for slurry or gas with liquid carryover

The choice of the correct type depends on the fluid properties, size of the line, pressure, and application. At NND Oil & Gas, we offer these configurations based on specific process requirements.

Material Options for Flow Element Orifice Plate

The orifice plate (primary flow element) can be made of various materials to suit the process conditions.

    Standard materials include:

    • Carbon Steel
    • Stainless Steel
    • Duplex Stainless Steel
    • Inconel
    • Hastelloy
    • Titanium

The choice of material depends on the operating pressure, temperature, corrosion resistance, and fluid characteristics. Proper material selection ensures long life and accurate measurement.

    Pressure Rating and Temperature Range

Orifice meters can be used for high-pressure industrial processes.

    Pressure Rating:

    ANSI B16.5 Class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500

    Operating Temperature Range:

    30°C to 400°C

The working pressure and temperature range will vary based on material quality, flange rating, and sealing type.

Accessories for Orifice Plate Flow Meter Systems

To improve the accuracy of the measurement process and eliminate installation restrictions, additional accessories can be included with an orifice plate meter.

    Optional accessories include:

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Where are orifice flow meters commonly used in industrial plants?

Orifice flow meters are commonly used in oil & gas, power plants, chemical industries, and pipeline systems where standardized and cost-effective flow measurement is required.

    2. Is an orifice type flow meter suitable for high-pressure pipelines?

Yes, an orifice type flow meter can be used in high-pressure applications, provided it is properly designed and installed. Orifice plate meters are usually provided with ANSI B16.5 pressure ratings, making them popular in high-pressure oil and gas, as well as industrial pipeline applications.

    3. What type of orifice plate should be selected for my application?

The choice of the flow orifice plate depends on the fluid being used and the conditions of the flow. Concentric orifice plates are used in clean fluids, while eccentric or segmental orifice plates are used in fluids with solids or gas-liquid fluids.

    4. How accurate is an orifice type flow meter?

Orifice typeflow meters provide accurate and repeatable measurements when properly sized, installed, and calibrated with suitable upstream and downstream piping conditions.
